Transportation

Canada’s humane livestock transportation regulations came into force on February 20, 2020, with the two-year transition period for feed, water and rest requirements ending in February 2022. The regulations prohibit the transport of unfit animals and establish specific requirements for transporting compromised animals.

Since implementation, research has continued to examine the impacts of long-distance transportation and mandatory rest stops on cattle health and welfare. CFIA continues to review scientific evidence and update guidance as needed. CCA supports a science-based approach to transportation regulations that protects animal welfare while recognizing the practical realities of cattle transportation and maintaining the industry’s strong track record.

CCA is asking the government to review the research and ensure regulations are based on sound science. It is imperative that we get the regulations right – our goal is to maintain and improve the industry’s excellent track record.

Before loading, make sure all cattle are fit for the journey. Identify any animals that are compromised, injured, ill or otherwise unable to withstand transportation. Unfit animals should not be transported. When in doubt, consult your veterinarian.
