Effective feeds contribute to the production and maintenance of healthy livestock. The CFIA verifies livestock feeds manufactured and sold in Canada or imported are safe, effective and are labelled appropriately. CFIA inspectors have enforcement authority and routinely inspect commercial feed mills and farms involved in the production of medicated feeds. The commercial feed industry continues to ensure safe production and handling of medicated feed through its Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP)-based voluntary program, FeedAssure™.
Developed by the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada, the national industry group representing commercial feed manufacturers, the FeedAssure™ program requires feed companies to manufacture according to HACCP principles. The requirements include the development and implementation of full HACCP plans and prerequisite programs for feed mills, verified through external third-party audits. Today, more than 70 per cent of commercial livestock feed is manufactured in feed mills that are HACCP certified under the FeedAssure™ program.
