Avoid Off-Label or Extra-Label Use of Drugs

Follow preparation instructions on the label e.g. reconstitution of live vaccines.

Extra or off -label means using animal health products different than on the label for species, disease/condition, route of administration, frequency and duration, timing, dosage, withdrawal period .

Extra-label use is illegal by the producer and can only be done by a veterinary prescription. Extra-label use should only be necessary when no other drug is available for the condition, which is rarely the case in the feedlot.

Keep detailed records of any extra-label use of drugs, including the veterinary prescription on animal(s) treated, date, drug, dose, route, condition, outcome.

When drugs are used extra-label, the withdrawal period changes dramatically and it is often unknown. Both the producer and the veterinarian are responsible and accountable for any drug residues that may result because of extra-label use of drugs.
