Feed, Water, and Bedding

Feed is stored accordingly to label directions and nutritionist’s recommendations. Feed storage area is only used to store feed ingredients. Feed additives are stored separately from other feedstuffs to prevent cross-contamination. Feed additives and storage bins are properly and clearly labelled.

Storage areas and containers are kept clean, dry, and free of contaminants (medications, pesticides, fertilizer, solvents, rodents, birds, manure, etc.). Spills are cleaned up immediately.

Water sources and troughs are kept clean of contamination. Only potable water is used with feeds/ingredients.

Feed equipment, including scales, mixers, bins, trucks, feed bunks, and water bowls are properly cleaned and maintained to ensure proper functioning and avoid feed contamination.

A current inventory is kept of feed medications and compared to the actual inventory on hand.

Pens, silage pits, catch-basins, and other manure storage areas are properly designed, cleaned and maintained to prevent run-off to water sources, leaching to ground water, and run-on from outside sources.

Bedding is stored to reduce contamination with feces of other animals.
