Forage Processing
Proper processing of forages is yet another link in the chain of
controlling the quality of feedstuffs. Silage, hay and various by-products each require
special consideration whether homegrown or purchased. Roughages all share a common
disadvantage to grains--their relatively large inventory losses through the handling and
mixing process. Every effort must be made to reduce these losses in an attempt to achieve
improved economic efficiencies.
Benefits for proper forage processing of quality feeds:
Reduction in inventory losses through
proper processing of forages.
Proper processing (reduction of particle
size) will achieve TMR
(Total Mixed Ration) thus achieving optimum nutrient utilization.
Achievement of good TMR will ultimately
effect cattle performance.
Improved economic efficiencies.
Processed roughage can be stored for
processed feedstuffs over a period of time prior to feeding.
Allows a combination of other processed
feed ingredients in a uniform ration.
Accomplishment of "steady
state" feed conditions.
