Facilities, Hygiene and Cattle Handling

Handling facilities are kept clean and in good working condition. They are regularly maintained and repaired well in advance of anticipated use. Handling facilities are designed to eliminate sharp corners. Head gates are designed to provide a cushioning effect against injury.

Cattle are handled gently and humanely at all times, based on their natural instincts, to avoid injury to cattle and handlers.

Staff, including volunteer help, are trained on proper animal handling and treatment techniques.

All equipment is kept clean and in good repair, including surgical equipment, treatment and feeding equipment (e.g. scales, mixer). A sanitation program is in place for equipment and facilities.

Transport trucks are kept clean and dry. Cattle are loaded in appropriate numbers and types of trucks to avoid overcrowding, nonambulatory cattle, bruising, and dark cutters.
