New measures will further strengthen Canada's food safety system

Calgary, AB – The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) believes the new rules and requirements for beef outlined in the Safe Food for Canadians Action Plan will further strengthen Canada’s food safety system. The enhanced controls are intended to reduce the risk of E.coli O157:H7.

Announced today by Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Gerry Ritz, the Action Plan includes new requirements for industry and government. Increased Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) testing and oversight is part of the plan, in addition to new requirements to strengthen existing controls at federally-registered beef plants that make beef trim, ground beef and beef patties.
