CCA welcomes JBS Food Canada, Inc.’s intent to purchase XL Foods Inc. assets

Calgary AB - The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) welcomed today’s news that JBS Food Canada, Inc., the Canadian subsidiary of JBS USA, will complete the transaction to purchase select assets of XL Foods Inc., effective January 14.

The announcement of intent marks the official entry of global protein giant JBS S.A. into Canada and comes three months after its wholly owned subsidiary, JBS USA, took over management of the XL processing facility in Brooks, AB.

CCA President Martin Unrau said the move gives producers certainty that the facility, one of Canada’s largest with the capacity to process 4,000 head per day, will remain viable well into the future.

“This is great news for producers. JBS has done a great job in managing the plant and helping it reach full potential. The new ownership will ensure feeders and producers continue to have access to another strong Canadian-located buyer for their cattle, while providing consumers with a steady supply of safe, high quality Canadian beef.”

JBS will upon closing also acquire XL’s Canadian properties consisting of a beef packing plant in Calgary, AB.; a feedlot in Brooks, AB., and the adjacent farmland acreage supporting the feedlot operation. JBS USA has the exclusive option to purchase the U.S. operations of XL Foods.
