CCA pleased Cairns Group remains strong on agriculture trade

Calgary, AB – The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) was a sponsor and participant at the Cairns Group Meetings this week in Saskatoon. The CCA Vice President, Martin Unrau, described the meetings as “an intense set of discussions aimed at expressing the importance that the Cairns Group attaches to realizing global reforms in agricultural policy and significant improvements in agricultural trade liberalization.”

Particularly pleasing to the CCA was the strong message carried by Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Gerry Ritz as host of the international Ministerial meeting that agriculture trade rules need to be based on science. All too often, Canadian beef producers have seen the resistance of countries to abide by internationally agreed science standards pose a barrier to trade or the failure of international bodies to approve new technologies in a timely manner create a disincentive to innovation.
